John and Bimby built a magnificent holiday cottage at Sea Island Georgia, which supplemented their homes in Atlanta and Maine and allowed them to entertain many friends and family members. Swimming in his pool at home in Rivermeade Drive NE Atlanta, or at Sea Island Ga. acted as both a pleasurable pursuit and physiotherapy. In later life, as the secondary weakness developed, he became a full-time wheel chair user. However his good brain, his charming manners, and his wide interests made light of such physical disability. He was appointed a Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the John H. Harland Company, and on retirement took charge of the John H. and Wilhelmina D. Harland Charitable Foundation, which is the backbone of support for the Boys' & Girls' Clubs in Atlanta, among other causes.
